Turn it over and you can see how it was made. One continuous spiral starts at a single point in the centre of the base and runs outward, ring after ring, to the edge. The walls are a denser weave. The rim is rolled over and bound by hand, rising and falling in a soft scallop, so no two points on the edge sit at quite the same height. A small foot ring lifts the whole thing clear of the table.

It is shallow on purpose. Fruit sits in a single layer where you can see it and reach across it, instead of piling up and bruising at the bottom. Bread comes to the table in it. On a kitchen counter it holds onions, garlic and limes; by the door it takes keys and post.

The cane is undyed, so it starts pale and darkens slowly toward honey with handling and daylight.

Natural cane and rattan are for indoors and covered spaces. Keep pieces a little away from the wall, wipe them dry after humid days, and treat black spots in the weave early. Dust with a soft brush, and never dry a wet piece in direct sun.
